How to be good in Dota 2

Dota 2, a MOBA that is easy to play but hard to master. It's learning curve is steep, sometimes so steep, new players quit after a losing streak while their team mates at insult to injury. Since this is a team game, stress may build up within the team and may damage your self esteem everytime you mess up and the whole team just reports and flames you. If you are new to the game and you plan to be better, you must be prepared to learn in a systematic way. For now, let's start with Dota 2 roles.

Roles are important to any team sport. In basketball, you can play with 5 point guards or 5 centers, but then 90% of the time you would lose HORRIBLY. Everyone would want to be the star of course but that would be bad for the team since Dota's main resource is time and gold, all 5 can't farm greedily at the same time.

Since there are 5 members in a team in Dota 2, I will discuss them all briefly and provide example heroes for each role.

First off, the position 1/Carry.
Carries are the stars of the team and usually stays at the safelane(Radiant bottom or Dire Top). In basketball they would be the Michael Jordans, Steph Currys and Lebron James. Carries are usually the "Last Hope" for the team. Carries are usually very weak at the early game but they are the strongest heroes at the late game. To be a successful carry, you must farm efficiently, PERIOD. Yes, as a carry you must be greedy. Of course it would be great if you help your team ASAP but first you must ask yourself, "is it worth it?". Trying to help and then dying would be far worse than letting other lanes lose abit but you continue to build your farm. Get your last hits up both for creep and hero if such case would be present.
Carry:
Phase 1 The early game
-Highest priority is gaining gold which means last hit, don't die, avoid losing battles, last hit on winning fights.
Phase 2 The mid game
-Farm carefully, carries are the prime gank target in mid game, complete core items, avoid losing battles, last hit on winning fights.
Phase 3 The late game
-Farm safely and push with team. If all cores are secured, start completing luxury items that would give great advantage to your team.

Next, position 2/Mid.
Mid players are players who thrive on 1-on-1s. They are capable of outplaying, outfarming and denying the opponent farm. They level up fast, which means more skills and since they are at the middle, they have access to both sides of the map to help other lanes get the advantage. To gank or not to gank, well first, check your hero if you have ganking skills like stuns, slows and other disables/nukes that would make the gank successful. Also you should check runes every 2 minutes, if ever you get haste or invis I would suggest you gank and help other lanes, if you get double damage or arcane rune, harass enemy mid and gain full advantage in your lane. If your hero is abit carry-ish and have weak or no ganking skill at all, better stay and farm mid, be warned though, supports often gank mid in the early game.
Mid:
Phase 1 The early game
-Last hit and deny creeps. Harass enemy mid. Use regen items wisely. Secure runes. STAY UPHILL and or ward the enemy side. Be careful since supports may smoke and gank you so stay on your side of the river as a rule of thumb, unless pushing with the whole team of course.
Phase 2 The mid game
-Gank other lanes or push with team. Get core items. Secure runes. Take enemy mid/carry down. Push Towers.
Phase 3 The late game
-Secure core items, start completing luxury items that would give great advantage to your team.
